Folk Tale about Water

The Fish of Maui
Te Ika a Maui

1.
Maui was sad. He overheard his brothers planning a fishing trip without him.

2.
Maui took the magic jawbone his Grandmother had given him, from it's hiding place in a secret cave.

3.
Under the cover of darkness Maui hid in the
waka.

4.
His brothers left early in the morning believing they were alone.

5.
Maui jumps up from his hiding place and surprises his brothers. They won't share their fishing bait with Maui...

6.
... so Maui hits his nose until it bleeds and smears the blood on the magic jawbone.

7.
Maui attaches the jawbone to a line and throws it way way out... into the ocean.

8.
Maui has something on the end of his fishing line! He struggles and the fish fights with all its might.

9.
Maui chants a
karakia as the struggle continues...the sea swirls and Maui's brothers hide, trembling with fear.

10.
The mighty fish is conquered by Maui. It rises to the surface - a huge magnificent fish.

11.

From the sea a great fish was caught by Maui. As time went by trees and vegetation grew and people came to live on this great land.
