Operation Noah

We had a look at what happens to animals and people when a dam is built.

Dams are important because they provide water and hydroelectricity. However when a dam is built people living on the banks of the river and the animals suffer as they are forced to leave their homes. We found out about 1 dam that was built in Africa.

Operation Noah

The Kariba dam was built on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia in the 1950's.

Soon the villagers that lived by the river bank would be flooded, so they had to move at least 51 000 people.

Then they realised that many of the animals would drown, so they started a programme and called it "Operation Noah".

What they did was this:

@ They went round all the islands using nets made out of stockings and drove the animals into the nets

@ The people jumped out of their hiding places and dropped the nets over the animals.

@ The animal's legs were tied up and the animals were loaded into the boats.

@ When they got close to the shore they untied the animal's legs and off-loaded them into the water and they swam to the land.

@ In this way over 5000 animals were rescued.

This photo was taken by Nicola's family. It is a giraffe. Katherine's grandfather was part of Operation Noah.
