The Little Match Girl
Summary by Jenny
It was New Years Eve and very cold, it had been snowing and was getting dark.
It was that gloomy night when a poor little girl walked through the streets, wearing a tattered cloth with no shoes. Her hair was in tangles and she was half-starved. When she left home she had her mother’s slippers on, but had lost one and a boy had run away with the other.
In the apron that was hung around her neck, she had lots of matches and in her hand she had a bundle of them. No one had bought anything from her that day, and no one had given her a donation. Though shivering with cold and hunger, she kept going. The snow covered her pretty curls, but she took no notice. In all the windows she past lights were shining, for it was New Years Eve! She sat down in the corner of an alleyway cold and shivering. She did not dare go home, for she hadn’t sold a match, and from her father she would certainly receive a beating. She lit a match to keep herself warm. She found herself sitting next to a gas stove. After a while the match went out, and the stove was gone. She lit another match and now the wall in front of her became a thin blind that she could see through. On the table in the room there was a delicious feast, and the lights lit the beautiful room. Again the match went out, and again she lit another match. Now she was sitting under a beautiful Christmas tree in a beautiful palace. After a few minutes the match went out and she was sitting in the dark alleyway. She lit another match and now in front of her stood her grandmother. “Oh don’t leave me!” cried the little girl, because she knew that her grandmother would go to heaven. Her grandmother took the child’s hands and lifted her up to heaven. She was found frozen to death the next day.
Questions:
1. In all the windows she past what was shining?
2. Why did she not go back to her house?
3. When she lit the first, match where did she find herself?
4. Why did the little girl have no slippers on?
5. What did the child say when she saw her grandmother?
6. When she lit the second match, what did she see on the table?
7. Did her hair have tangles, or was it silky?![]()
