medical treatments have come a long way

Then and Now
Catharine
Mr. Sicbaldi
1.What would happen if you had a stomachache or headache?
I never had headaches, but if I had a stomachache I would go to bed. I wouldn¡Çt take any medicine.
2. Were there many cancer treatments?
There were none except for x-ray (radiation), which could burn.
3. In your opinion, how far has medical treatment come since you were a kid?
It has come a very long way. When I had cancer, there was no chemotherapy but I survived it for 30 years. There weren¡Çt glasses, contacts, hearing aids or heart treatments either.
4. What kinds of everyday medications (Tylenol, Tums, aspirin, etc.) do we have today that you didn¡Çt?
All of the above are things that I did not have. There were no antibiotics. There might have been some form of aspirin and there was Alka-Seltzer.
5. Do you wish that there had been more treatments for stomachaches, headaches, small pains, etc.?
Yes. Nobody knew about allergies and there were no treatments for hey fever, which my mother had. My father also died of a heart attack and was only told to lie down. There weren¡Çt medicines for chicken pox; there were only vaccinations for whooping cough and small pox.
6.What were the most common medicines that were kept in your house?
There weren¡Çt any vitamin pills but there was:
1:Cod liver oil
2:Vicks for coughs that you could rub on your body
3:Some sort of aspirin
7.Did you take cod liver oil? Why? What medication(s) could you take today instead?
Yes. Cod liver oil helped keep me healthy as a child. That is why we eat fish today; especially oily fish. They help keep us healthy. Today, we take vitamins instead.
