Exciting illness

Question #1: What would you do if you had a headache or fever?Answer: If you had a headache or a fever you would just take aspirin or lie down with a cold rag on your head. Tylenol and Advil weren¡Çt around yet.Question #2: What would you use for pain relief?Answer: For pain relief normally you would take aspirin or buffered aspirin, which has a coating over it so it won¡Çt be so hard on your stomach. If you had sunburn you would get something called solar caine. My mom said it didn¡Çt really work that well. Today we use Aloe Vera.

Question #3: What would you do if you had a broken bone?Answer: If you had a broken bone it was almost the same except they used plaster casts which you don¡Çt see as much these days.Question #4: What would you use to clean out cuts and prevent infections?Answer: To clean out cuts you would use Iodine, Mercurochrome, or rubbing alcohol. They all sting a lot but my mom said the pain of the rubbing alcohol was nearly unbearable. ¡ÈRubbing alcohol probably hurts more than the cut did.¡É Today we have hydrogen peroxide and Neosporin. Neither of them sting.

Question #5: Were medicines more fairly priced than they are now?Answer: Prescription medicines were definitely more fairly priced but there weren¡Çt very many medicines to choose from. Today I bet there are over 500 prescriptions you can get in Newtown. I don¡Çt think they are fairly priced though. My wart cream cost $139.00. Question #6: What would they use to numb you if you were getting stitches. Answer: If you were getting stitches it¡Çs the same as today. Novocain. If you were having a tooth pulled or a filling they would use laughing gas.

Question #7: Was medicine take as commonly as it is now?Answer: Medicine was rarely taken. Kids mostly just took aspirin for headaches and fevers. The only prescription that kids really got was penicillin. Today almost every kid gets a prescription. A long time ago only really older people got prescriptions.
