What School Used to be Like

My grandfather started school when he was 5 at Webster Elementary School. This school was built in 1886. It was originally called The Oak Street School because it was on the corner of Oak Street. Its name was changed in 1916 to Webster Elementary School. It was two stories high and had a basement. His school had kids from kindergarten to seventh grade. It held two hundred twenty-five kids. There were 30-35 kids per class, which would be more then the amount we have today. The subjects that his school taught were English, math, and social studies. The same teacher taught every subject.

When he finished Webster he went to Maple Wood Junior High. This covered grades 7-9. Everyday he had to walk four miles total. He had to walk to school and then back home for lunch and back and forth once more. At this school he had reading, math, English, and social studies. He also had a metal and wood shop. They also had another special, gym. This was the only special they had. Now he had a different teacher for each subject and had to switch classes. This school had sports teams too. Its biggest sports were baseball and football.

After he went to Maple Wood he went to Central High. The grades here were 10-12. Now there were about 1000 kids in the whole school. The hours that he went to school were from 8:00-3:00. He had one hour for lunch everyday so he went to school for about six hours the same amount of time that we go to school now for. This school was only five minutes from his house so it was much easier to walk to it. He also had a got a car when he was 16 so he could drive to it. Most of the people who went to the school were in the right grade, but occasionally they had to stay back a year. For kids that were falling behind they had a special education classes for them so they could catch up. Another special that was optional was mechanical drawing that he decided to take. This school had a cafeteria so he didn”Ēt have to walk home for lunch. At Central High he also had sports teams and the biggest was football.
