Looking Back Through Time
![]()
About maybe 65 years ago in Minnesota this is how school was. K-6 was called elementary school. Back then you walked to school, and back from school. You also had to walk home for lunch. Every way it was about a mile. So for the whole day you would have walked 3 miles. For lunch you only had 1 hour and 15 minutes for lunch so people usually ran home and ran back. Kids back then were usually good and respectful on school. Of coarse there are those troublemakers and for them there was detention. Detention was either emplace of lunch or after school. You were in the same class for every subject except gym and singing class. In singing class all the bad singers had to sit up front. This is the best part. Kids back then NEVER had homework. You had recess everyday usually before you went home. For girls, you had to wear only dresses for school. In winter they could wear snow pants over their dresses to and from school. Never though, in school. There were about 30-35 kids in each class. There were 3 or 4 classes in each grade. They put kids in classes randomly or in some parts of Minnesota, by smartness. At school there was ¡ÈSturdy and Sparkle¡É. That¡Çs when tooth check up people came in to check your teeth. If your teeth were clean and healthy they would give you a star sticker. If you were sick you had to stay home, no matter what. When you had the measles you had to stay in bed with the shades drawn (so it was really dark) for a week or else it was believed you would go blind.
