Ilnesses from the past

There were many different illnesses back when my grandma and grandpa were children. There were also many different cures for all of them. Every body had the chicken pox when they were little. My grandma would rest in bed and have aspirin every day. You would just play in bed until you got better. If you were really sick you could even stay home for more than a week. To help cure stop the itching, you can take an oatmeal bath.

The whooping cough was a very bad cough that you could get anytime of the year. The local doctor came to your house and gave you medicine to help your cough. You would have sherbet and ginger ale to help it. Measles gave you a horrible rash. You would take aspirin too. In this case you would also rest and save your energy. My grandpa had the mumps a lot. You would put black salve on your face and wrap your face in a cloth. Every day my grandma”Ēs mom gave her lots of fluids and healthy foods.

Gripe is a really tight chest cold. This is a little worse than the whooping cought. Every morning and night my grandma and grandpa would drink fever powders. This is a special powder you would pour in cup. Then you would mix the powder with water and honey. After that your mom would give you a spoonful of cod liver oil every day for a week. The cod liver oil keeps you healthy.

Polio is a very bad sickness. When you get it your leg would shrink smaller than it is. It would destroy all your leg mussels. Since your leg mussels are all destroyed you would either be in a wheel chair or in crutches. To cure polio the doctor would give you a very strong shot or a drink.
