Then and Now

Have you ever wondered about school back then and school now? Well there¡Çs a big difference. My Grandma went to school in a one-room schoolhouse with one teacher and four grades. At lunch every student sat at their desk and ate. The reason is there was no cafeteria. The desks in the one room schoolhouse have tops that open up so you can store your books.

You won¡Çt believe how my grandma got to school. She walked a mile and a half! It didn¡Çt matter what the weather was, you still had to walk even in the rain, sleet, and snow. Back then there were no snow days, or buses.

When my grandma went to school she studied many subjects such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Reading was similar to reading now. When we write we write stories. When my grandma wrote she wrote words like what we do in spelling. Back then my grandma studied arithmetic, today we call it math. Back then they studied the same math problems that we do today. For example, she solved addition problems, subtraction problems, multiplication problems, and division problems. Since my grandma¡Çs school was in the woods her class took field trips outside the schoolhouse and named flowers, trees, and animals. School sure has changed over many years.
