Sicknesses Then and Now
1. Were there any so-called cures for the common cold?¡ÈMy mother would put a piece of flannel lard on your chest and it would take away the stuffiness.
¡É2.Was there a cure for chicken pox or small pox? No, none that I can recall. Our family didn¡Çt get sick that often and our family could not afford any visits to the doctors.3.Was there a cure for Mumps and/or measles? ¡ÈIf you had measles then you would be kept in a dark room because doctors said that light was bad for your eyes.¡É
4.Do you know of any cures that never seemed to work for you or any other people? ¡ÈOne cure that never work was a medicine that was called Gentian Violet. It was a cure for canker sores and it only turned your mouth purple. Everyone always dreaded getting canker sores because you would always be told that you had cooties. Also a different cure was something that my parents and grandparents called Spring Tonic. It had an awful taste and it only contained sulpher and molasses.
As all of you know, everyone gets sick sometimes and all we need to do is go to a doctor and our problems will be solved. It was not that simple a while ago. Also many of you may be wondering why we all have so many home remedies. Well, the simple answer is that instead that of going to the doctor (it was too expensive at the time), everyone made home remedies. Now you can explain all of the home remedies that seem to be unreal. Some of the old home remides that were made up in the past are still used today. An example of one of those medicnes are Gention Violet, as mentioned before. It turns your mouth purple.
