Illnesses· What kind of illnesses did you or could you get?Grandma¡Çs answer: Measles, Chicken Pox, sore throats, & colds. I also had my tonsils taken out.My answer: Strep/sore throat, colds, ear infections, & croup. I also had my tonsils removed.Comparison: We both had sore throats, colds and had our tonsils out. Medications What kind of medications did the doctor give if you were ill?Grandma¡Çs answer: Cough syrup and antibiotics just started coming in. We had very little. I used penicillin and melted aspirin. When I had stomachaches I was given warm coke syrup.My answer: I use many antibiotics, penicillin and Tylenol.Differences: I have more antibiotics and use them a lot.· Did medications work? If so, how fast?Grandma¡Çs answer: Medications worked eventually but slowly.My answer: Some medications work fast, but most of the others take days.Comparison: Most medications worked slowly for both of us.· How would you compare medications today to medications from your childhood?Grandma¡Çs answer: There are a lot more now! Now you can buy them readily available!

Hospital· Did you ever have to go to the hospital?Grandma¡Çs answer: Never. I did go to the doctor¡Çs office to get my tonsils removed though!My answer: Yes, I had my tonsils out in the hospital.Differences: I got my tonsils out in the hospital, not at my doctor¡Çs office.

School Nurses· What did school nurses do if you were ill/sick at school?Grandma¡Çs answer: They were not aloud to give medicine to us. They only put mud on bee-stings.My answer: We can have cough drops, antibiotics, and Motrin / Tylenol. Differences: I can have a lot of things when I go to the nurse. My Grandma couldn¡Çt.

Stories/Remedies· What were remedies for allergies?Grandma¡Çs answer: I had eye and nose drops for hay fever. I didn¡Çt have allergy medicine.My answer: I have allergy medicine, and eye and nose drops.Comparison: We both had eye and nose drops.Difference: I have allergy medicine and Grandma didn¡Çt.· What did your family do to help you feel better when you were ill?Grandma¡Çs answer: My mother always put Vicles Vapor-rub on my chest when I had sore throats or colds. She wouldn¡Çt let me eat a lot. · Do you have any special stories you¡Çd like to share? Grandma¡Çs Tonsillectomy- My parents drove me to the doctors¡Ç office. Dad left and Mom stayed. I was five years old. I put on a mask over my face that smelled of grapefruit. Later, I woke up in the office and drank water with big ice cubes in it. I was wrapped in blankets and the doctor drove my mother and I home. That night my father came home from work with a cardboard letter tile game to make words with. I ate ice cream for a week.
