Sick As A Dog

As a treatment for the common cold, my grandpa¡Çs dad would warm his own hands over the gas stove. Then he would apply Vicks to my grandpa¡Çs chest. My grandpa¡Çs mother would then put a heavy shirt on him (my grandpa), which kept my grandpa warm and helped the flow of the Vicks fumes towards his nose. This was a very common treatment. My grandma¡Çs mom would give my grandma tea with honey as a treatment for the common cold. This helped soothe my grandma¡Çs throat. Many people still use this treatment today. My grandma¡Çs mom would also give her (my grandma) lots of rest.

Both my grandma and my grandpa had the same treatment for the measles when they were kids. They both say that their mom or dad would put them in a dimly lit room so that they wouldn¡Çt strain their eyes with too much light. My grandma also said that she was given plenty of rest and fruit juice.

For the chicken pox, my grandpa said that his mom would dab some of a lotion similar to calamine lotion on the chicken pox and then put him to bed.My grandma says that her mom would do the same thing, but would also put gloves or mittens on her hands so that she couldn¡Çt scratch.

My grandpa says that as a child he got the Mumps. He says that his mother did many things to treat his case of the Mumps. He says that first his mother would put a thick scarf around his neck to keep him warm. Then she would put him to bed with some juice. His mother also made sure that he got plenty of rest.
