Project Summaries

THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT
EVENTS, PEOPLE AND INVENTIONS THAT HAVE IMPACT

p01 Review of 20th Century - Judith Bennett

  • Time - either a year within the range 1900-2000 or a decade within that range
  • Location - might be a country name but country borders have changed a lot during 20th Century
  • Topic - this will be things like transport, communications, migration, political changes, natural disasters (earthquakes, storms, volcanoes etc)
  • Event - description of what happened

Result - contributor and/or others give opinions about how that event influenced subsequent events. It would be good to have more than one opinion about each event to illustrate that there is no one "correct" answer.

  • p02 Children's heroes in the 20th Century - TORIGOE Yuko

Draw your hero in the 20th century with the following information.

  • Name
  • Nationality
  • Occupation
  • Reason why he/she is your hero

He/She might be a national leader, sports player, artist, movie star, or animation film star, etc.
Tell us your first name and nationality as well.

  • f03 Technology and the 21st Century - Judith Bennett

This has two aspects. One is descriptions of current technologies. The other is a chance for students to predict the impact of each technology on life in the 21st Century.

As I see it, the descriptions could come from either adults or children but it would be better if the predictions all came from students younger than 18. (Their thinking may need to be guided by adults however.) It would be good to have many different predictions about each technology.

c02 Learning From Hiroshima - TORIGOE Genshi

Our goal is to learn from the "past" for the "future".

I would like to encourage our 6th grade students:

  • to research the facts of Hiroshima at the time of WWII before the trip
  • to visit Hiroshima to see exhibits in the Peace Musium and to listen to stories from one of atomic bomb victims
  • to tell people in the world what the students learn from Hiroshima and to share it with them
  • to think together what we can do for the world peace based on what the students learn

c09 Marking the Millennium - Lone Neilson

Children publish information about what is done in their country to mark the Year 2000 - it might be a special coin that is minted, or a new postage stamp, or a new recipe, or a sculpture.

THE WAY WE CARE FOR OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

p04 Environment and Conservation in the 20th Century - Lynne Ralph

What conservation methods were introduced in your region during the 20th Century? What wildlife was important to preserve and has this changed over the course of the century?

c04 Environment and Conservation Now - Lynne Ralph

Please tell us about current conservation in your country. What methods are used to help preserve your natural environment and wildlife?

f04 Environment and Conservation Plans for the 21st Century - Lynne Ralph

What would you like to see preserved for your children and their children to enjoy? Can you think of the ways in which this could be achieved?

    THE WAY WE LIVE

p07 Where did my family live? - Judith Bennett

    Migration during the 20th Century
During these years millions of people moved from country areas to cities, from one town to another or from one country to another, even moving to the other side of our planet.
Children interview their parents and grandparents and tell stories about moving, why families moved and what happened during the move, how they settled in the new place, using photos and drawings.

c06 Moving house - Judith Bennett

Children record their own experiences of moving house with their families.
How did they feel about leaving friends, favourite places?
How did they make new friends and learn to live in the new place?
Did they need to learn a new language?

p06 Exploring the Street - TORIGOE Genshi

Continuation of Earth Calendar Online Exploring the Street Project.
Children or their teachers photograph items of interest in the street near where they live, items such as postboxes, garbage bins, police cars and these are compared with those from other countries.

    c01 Streets on Jan 1, 2000 - TORIGOE Genshi

What happened in a street near you on January 1, 2000?
People take photos and we compare - maybe we will see the difference between Northern and Southern Hemisphere seasons.

c12 School Life - TORIGOE Genshi

I would like to encourage students to record the present school life and to compare it with that of students in the world. Please send photos, drawings, videos of your school life with short text.

    c11 2000 Earth Trip - IWANO Hiromasa

"Shall we get on board a ship "Friendship" and make a trip around the earth? The destination is your town."
I would like to encourage children to record the town where they live. By introducing their own town where they do live now, which might be too small to be on a travel brochure, children will understand different cultures and nature on the earth.
We build a ship "Friendship", and children get on board the ship to travel around the earth. Children take "Friendship" to their town and show some places Children take some photos of the places and introduce them with simple comments. "2000 Earth Trip" is a collaboration created by the crew on "Friendship"

f01 Dreams for my Future -  Lone Neilson

Task : Draw / tell about how you imagine your future from 2000 - 2050
You can use the following questions :

  • Where and how do you live?
  • What kind of a job do you have?
  • How's your everyday?
  • Describe your way to and from your job?
  • Tell what the world looks like?

  • THE WAY WE PLAY

    p08 20th Century Toys - Jan Haarmann

Children ask their parents and grandparents about the toys of the past.

  • What were they made of?  Who made them?
  • Are there any pictures of them?
  • Can older people describe them well so that children can draw them?

  • c07 Children and their toys in the year 2000 - Jan Haarmann

  • What sort of toys do children play with in the year 2000?
  • Which are the favourite toys and why?
  • Are toys the same in many countries?

  • f05 Creating future toys - Jan Haarmann

Children design the sort of toys they would like to play with.
Draw them, make design plans or build a prototype and photograph it.

    THE WAY WE WORK

p05 Tools our grandparents used - IWANO Hiromasa

Aim: By comparing tools which have been dramatically changed that grandparents used and children/parents are using now, I would like children to realize the progress of technology.

Children take a photo of a tool which their grandparents or old people used. Then they ask viewers "Guess what".
Other children answer "what it was (is) for" with text or drawings.

c08 Tools we use today - IWANO Hiromasa

Children think about the work people did in the past that is entered in project p05 Tools our grandparents used and show what they (or their parents) are using now for the same purpose, which might not differ so much in the world.

f06 Designing future tools - IWANO Hiromasa

Taking the tasks identified in projects p05 Tools in the Past and c08 Tools used now, design a future tool that will be good for this sort of work. Tools might be for calculation, washing, cutting grass, taking a bath, keeping warm, etc.

It will make a digital mural as a whole in the end.

c10 Millennium Fairy tales - Lone Neilson

Children choose a well known fairy tale e.g. a story by Hans Christian Anderson or the Grimms brothers and see if they can rewrite it to happen in the year 2000.

f02 Poems and peace messages - TORIGOE Yuko

There have been made lots of wars and struggles in the world in the 20th century.

I would like to encourage children to think about peace. Write poems or messages for the future (with drawings or photos).
