We are proud to be Lakota!

Welcome to Rosebud Elementary School
located on the Rosebud Sioux
Reservation. This is the land of the
Sicangu Lakota Oyate. Our school is in
the town of Rosebud, South Dakota. We
are the Burnt Thigh Nation.

Every morning we gather in a circle,
around the drum, to start our school day.

The Meaning Of
The Circle

With us, the
circle stands
for the
togetherness of
our people that
sat around the
fire, relatives
and friends
united in peace
while the pipe
was passed from
hand to hand.
All of the
families are a
circle within a
larger circle,
part of the
larger hoop of
the nation.
Circles within
circles with no
beginning and
no end. Life is
an endless
circle.

What Is Sage?

The spirit in
the smoke of
the sage plant
is very
offensive to
all the evil
beings and they
will fly from
it. They even
fear the sage
plant and will
not stay where
it is. If
anyone carries
sage, or keeps
it near, the
evil beings
will be scared
and leave you
alone. Sage is
a medicine and
can be used in
tea.

Why We Smudge...

Every morning we smudge to heal our
spirits and cleanse ourselves. We fan
the smoke from the burning sage over our
bodies to purify us and our day. It
helps us to open our eyes and calm our
spirit so we can have a good day learning.
