Labour Day, New Zealand


Labour Day falls on the last Monday of 
October and celebrates the introduction 
of the eight hour working day in New Zealand.  

Samuel Parnell, a carpenter, successfully 
fought for the eight hour working day in 
Wellington, 1840. 

The long three day weekend heralds the 
beginning of warmer weather with many 
New Zealander's travelling to their favourite 
beach or going away for the weekend.
