THE BUNGLE BUNGLES, PURNULULU NATIONAL PARK
The Kimberley Region, Western Australia

The mountain range is very unique and is made up
of huge domes striped with orange (silica) and
black (Lichen). They look like giant beehives

They are extremely fragile
and rock climbing is not
allowed.
Once the orange and black
coating is damaged, the
sandstone inside
disintegrates

Many species of birds,
reptiles and mammals
have been recorded in
the park.
A large variety of
plants can also be
found from the
Purnululu Fan Palm,
the hardy Eucalyptus,
to the Spinifex grass

The Range is estimated to be about 360 million
years old
"purnululu" means "sandstone" in the local Kija
language
