Strange Sled Race

Polihau the snow goddess and her snow maidens 
one day covered their snow mantles with 
mantles of the sun. 
Then they all took their long slender sleds 
and raced to the grassy narrow track that had
been laid. 
The snow maidens urged Poliahu to race. 
So Polihau said "Yes". 
She made a running start and threw herself 
on the sled. 
Then she took up speed with her 
Next she stopped and marked a spot and 
put her sled aside. 
The snow maidens followed Polihau's tracks 
and stopped at the mark. 
Then they saw a strange woman in the mist. 
The snow maidens recognized the woman. 
It was Pe'le the fire goddess. 
After that Pe'le stomped the ground and the
lava came spurting out. Then the lava died. 
Pe'le was very angry and gave a loud shout. 

The snow maidens watched in fear. 
Poliahu plunged through the wall of fire.
After that Poliahu leaped off her sled 
and blasted Pe'le with ice. 
Then she shivered and shouted "Swallow her up!" 
but the snow had put out the lava. 

Pe'le was very angry and left. 
So Pe'le never came back on that side of the
mountain of Mauna Kea.
