Maui traps the sun

On Wailuku River lived a man named Maui.
At Rainbow Falls lived Maui's mother Hina.
Maui had a magic club, a magic spear,
and a magic canoe paddle all from
his grandmother.

Hina his mother worked on her tapa every day.
At the end of the day her tapa needed to dry
up but there was no sun to dry it.

One day Maui travelled to the home of
the sun in a dead volcano.
Soon the sun awoke.
As fast as Maui could go Maui tied three
of the Sun's rays to stones then he
started to struggle.
Maui asked the sun to slow down so that
his mother could dry her tapa but the
sun said "I will not" then Maui broke
one of the Sun's rays off.
Soon all the rays were tied down.
Then sun gave up and said "I'll go
slowly if you let me go" and he did.

Whenever Sun wanted to speed up his broken
ray it reminded him of Maui.
