New Year - "Hatsumode" (1) - Japan

"Hatsumode" is the first visit to a Shinto
shrine or a Buddhist temple in a new year.
People pray for health and happiness in the
new year.

My family visited a Shinto shrine in the
community.

We gave money offerings and
prayed.

Do you see twisted straw
rope? This is "Shimenawa",
a rope hung out to distinguish
sacred places from the rest.

Various good luck charms were sold.
