Uploading Video Files
The Earth Calendar Online Server is G2 compliant. This means you are able to upload media files and have them 'stream' across the internet. Without Stream technology, you would have to wait for the entire video file to download on your own computer, before you could view it. As Video files are usually very large (over 1 Megabyte) the wait can be very long. With Streaming the video plays as it downloads.
In order to comply with the Streaming Media technology, you will need to create a .ram file which will act as a pointer and instruction code for the streaming of your .rm video file.
To create a .ram file, open a text based editor such as the Windows Notepad. The text you will need in your .ram file will be something like this:
- rtsp://paoprj.lucksnet.or.jp/earth-c/html/9908aug/gif/myvideo.rm
The rtsp:// indicates the Earth Calendar Online Server is G2 compliant and able to stream Real Media content across the internet. Replace 9908aug with the month you are uploading your video file to and replace myvideo.rm with the name of your video .rm file.
Save your text in Notepad and remember to save it with a .ram extension. In other words, when you click on [Save as ...] type in myvideo.ram
Now you are ready to upload your video to Earth Calendar Online. You have two files to upload:
Upload both files via the Online Post Function. For a reminder on how to access and upload using Online Post, click here.
- myvideo.rm - your large Real Media Video file.
- myvideo.ram - your pointer and instruction .ram file that allows your video file to stream across the internet.
Once you have uploaded your .rm and .ram files you are ready to create your web page. There are two options:
If you choose Format 1, simply click and select the .ram file you have already uploaded. Click here for a reminder on how to use Format 1.
- Create a page using Format 1 in the Online Page Creator (no HTML knowledge required) OR
- Make your own web page using the HTML Format.
If you wish to create your own page using the HTML Format option, please continue reading below.
To place a Real Video link within a web page:
Earth Calendar Directory
Include the location of your video .ram file as shown above. The blue writing shows the address where all picture, sound and video files are stored on the Earth Calendar server. The red entry you make will depend on what month you upload your file to e.g April 1999 is 9904apr, May 1999 is 9905may, and so on.
Video file name
The green entry should be the name of your video .ram file. Replace kiwi.ram with your filename.
